9th CIRCUIT COURT OF APPEALS UPHOLDS DACA

[Houston, TX] On Thursday November 8, 2018 the 9th Circuit Court appeals ratified the stance that President Trump cannot repeal the DACA Program. FIEL Spokespeople are available for comment.

"We are content that once again the courts have ratified that President Trump cannot unilaterally end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. We understand though that this may slow down or speed up the timeline for when the supreme court takes this case. It is upsetting that DREAMers have to face this uncertainty without a tangible path for a permanent solution to their situation. Our hope is that this decisions slows down the administrations plan to dismantle DACA and offers us a window of time to push forward DREAMer legislation. We hope that the change in congress also opens up room for meaningful dialogue and a willingness to resolve this issue once and for all. " – Cesar Espinosa Executive Director FIEL

FIEL CONDEMNS TRUMPS PROPOSED EXECUTIVE ORDER ON BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP

[Houston, TX] On Monday October 29, 20018 President Trump commented that he would announce an executive order regarding birthright citizenship and the 14th Amendment. FIEL Spokespeople are available for comment.

To read Trumps comments: click here

"We adamantly condemn President Trump’s statement on attacking birthright citizenship. For many decades the constitution has been respected and this hasn’t been a pressing issue. It is truly a shame that President Trump has once again launched an attack against the immigrant community by trying to instill fear. It is a shame that he is also using this very touchy issue to galvanize his base right before the midterm elections. We know that civil rights organizations will sue based on the constitutionality of this and we hope that at the end of this debacle the constitution will prevail. TRUMP ADMINISTRATION TRANSFERS $10 MILLION FROM FEMA TO ICE

[Houston, TX] On Wednesday September 12, 2018, in a story on USA today, (read story here) Senator Merkley outlines how the Trump administration took $10 million dollars from the agency to help in detention and deportation operations for ICE. FIEL spokespeople are available for comment.

"We are in the middle of Hurricane season and to have received this news, living in a region devastated by Hurricane Harvey, is a definite cause for concern. We know that there are several significant storm systems coming our way and now more than ever we need the systems that are in place like FEMA so be adequately prepared to respond to anything that comes our way. It is important to point out that last year, after several devastating natural disasters, FEMA had already had a budget shortfall and budget cuts. To take more money from an agency that bears more responsibilities and becomes increasingly necessary is irresponsible. We also condemn the fact that this money will be sued to further Trumps political agenda of detaining and separating more, families and more children. " – Cesar Espinosa Executive Director FIEL

TRUMP PROPOSES INDEFINITE DETENTION OF FAMILIES

[Houston, TX] On Thursday September 6, 2018 the Trump Administration announce a NEW RULE suspending the Flores Settlement (Flores V Reno) and now announcing that children can be detained with the families INDEFINITELY pending an asylum claim. FIEL Spokespeople are available for comment.

"This is yet another attack by the Trump administration against the immigrant community. In the Flores V Reno case it was determined that holding children in detention for more than 20 days was inhumane. Now 20 years later the trump administration seeks to do away with the ruling and create a new set of guideline.

This could have devastating impacts on over crowding and civil rights violations at detention centers.

We condemn this ruling and hope that someone may challenge it in court before 60 days pass and it is implemented fully. " – Cesar Espinosa Executive Director FIEL

PASSPORTS BEING DENIED TO U.S. CITIZENS

[Houston, TX] On Wednesday August 29, 2018 the Texas Tribune reported on a story of U.S. Citizens being denied passports particularly in the Texas Valley near the U.S. Mexico border. We have seen this question of birthright citizenship come up before. FIEL spokespeople are available for comment.

" Unfortunately this is not the first time we have seen U.S. citizens being denied their passports. In previous administrations there was a questioning of the validity of peoples citizenship especially when they are born to a midwife which is common practice in rural areas and in areas where the cost of hospitalization may be unattainable for some. We want to make sure to encourage U.S. Citizens (including naturalized citizens) to continue in their process of obtaining their passports. We would also like to point out that this does not change the process of obtaining their children’s passports even if the parents are without status. We also encourage people who may find themselves in situations where there are doubts to seek immediate legal counsel. " – Cesar Espinosa Executive Director FIEL

SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED TO 5 STEM LATINX YOUTH

[Houston, TX] On Thursday August 30 at 6:30 pm at Leonel Castillo Center (2101 South St, Houston, TX 77009) community members will gather to honor 5 deserving Latin X youth with a $2000 scholarship. The scholarship is a privately funded initiative by Gustavo Suarez. He is available for comment.

Background on Gustavo Suarez:

After blowing out close to USD$500K back in 2008 due to bad business ventures & the US Great Recession, no money, and a deportation letter from immigration on my desk. I thought it was over for me. Back in 2011, I met my mentor. He believed in me and helped me to dream bigger than I thought. A few years later, I turned my life around. I graduated as a petroleum engineer and successfully built 2 companies that provide me with the financial foundation that allows me to do what I love the most: Help my community.

"I told my self that giving back could not stop here. I received a life changing benefit and now it is time for me to pass the ball. This is why I decided to start a self-funded scholarship with a mentoring component. The STEM recipients have been selected by the committee who kindly donated their time to make this a reality. "On the 6th anniversary of DACA we want to make sure that all are reminded of the countless contributions immigrants and DREAMers have made into the U.S. Economy. It is important that we recognize and value this and instead of attempting to remove the program that we may come together and find a permanent solution for DREAMers and their families. As undocumented people we are facing tough times but we are a resilient community and we will prevail. " – Cesar Espinosa Executive Director FIEL
