FIEL STATEMENT ON 5TH CIRCUIT SB 4 RULING
[HOUSTON, TX] On Saturday March 2nd 2024 the 5th circuit Court of Appeals reverted a lower court’s ruling on the stop of SB4. It gave the DOJ 7 days to appeal the ruling otherwise the law will take effect. FIEL spokespeople are available for comment.
“We find it appalling that this law is making its way so quickly through our legal system. It is also very telling of the lengths that the Republican party is willing to go to attack immigrants. We warned people that this would be a long process, but apparently the fifth circuit took it upon itself to hastily move this law forward. We hope that the Supreme Court intervenes, and we call on the Department of Justice to do everything in its power to make sure that this law does not take effect in the next couple of days. This law could have devastating impacts on our state’s immigrant population, as well as our economy. We hope the Supreme Court makes the right choice for the well-being of the community, the well being of the state of Texas and the well being of the United States." – Cesar Espinosa FIEL Executive Director
