GOOD NEWS AND BAD NEWS ON HEALTHCARE FOR IMMIGRANTS
[HOUSTON, TX] On Friday, November 1st, 2024 Two policies go into play for the immigrant community. On the one hand, the regressive policy of asking for people’s status in hospitals rolls out in the State of Texas. On the other hand for the first time "DACA" recipients will be able to enroll in the Affordable Care Act. FIEL Released the following statement.
“What a significant day in both good and bad ways. Our community is very worried about the new Texas policy that requires hospitals to ask about citizenship status. We want to warn people and caution them that this DOES NOT MEAN you cannot receive healthcare it is just a tool that the state is using for its own political purposes. We encourage everyone to seek preventative care and if need be continue to visit area hospital care that they are entitled to under the law. For another part of our community, today marks the first day that DACA recipients will be able to access the marketplace under the Affordable Care Act. For many of these "DREAMers" this will have life-altering results. Many for the first time will have access to good quality healthcare. We encourage all eligible people to apply nd we will be hosting workshops to guide people through the process. " – Cesar Espinosa FIEL Executive Director
