ICE OUT OF HOUSTON ACTION

[HOUSTON, TX] The following statement may be attributed to Cesar Espinosa from FIEL Houston

“Throughout U.S. history, student walkouts have played a meaningful role in the advancement of civil rights. From the walkouts led by Black students during the Civil Rights Movement, to the 1968 East L.A. student walkouts demanding educational equity, to more recent nationwide youth mobilizations, walkouts have consistently served as a peaceful and powerful tool for social change. These actions reflect a long tradition of young people stepping forward to challenge injustice and expand democratic participation.

Protecting the right to free expression in the United States is essential. This right, guaranteed by the First Amendment, is a cornerstone of our democracy and has enabled generations of people—especially young people—to speak out against discrimination, inequality, and abuses of power. Defending this right is not only a legal obligation but a moral one, ensuring that communities can raise their voices without fear of retaliation.

We should be looking to support these young people in their understanding of social movements. The governor and school officials should be securing safe spaces for dialogue and not just focus on punishing these young people.

As an organization, we believe that non‑violent expression in defense of civil rights is vital for youth empowerment. When young people engage in peaceful actions—whether through walkouts, demonstrations, or other forms of civic participation—they are exercising their constitutional rights and developing the leadership skills that strengthen our society. Their voices matter, and their participation is part of a long and honorable legacy of democratic engagement.” -Cesar Espinosa FIEL Houston
