POST HARVEY: HOUSTON’S DANGEROUS APARTMENT EPIDEMIC

[Houston, TX] On Tuesday, February 27th , 2018 at 11:00am CST at Houston City Hall (901 Bagby St, Houston, TX 77002) Local Organizers will hold a press conference outside of Houston’s City Hall in order to call attention to the dangerous conditions some Houstonians are still living in their dwellings.

In the wake of Harvey, many Houston residents and particularly those living in low-income housing were pushed further aback. The storm devastated hundreds of thousands of people that were already living in some questionable dwellings. This issue has been occurring for years, if not decades, and the current system in place gives too much power to the landlords and little accountability for their actions in the face of vulnerable tenants. The storm brought these issues to light along with the report "Out of Order" from UT Law Clinic which reinforced what many tenants have been complaining about for years. It is time to revamp our code enforcement and to finally help Houston’s residents living in such poor conditions to live with dignity.

Fiel Houston, Texas Housers and other organizations will be holding a press conference outside of city hall, presenting the most pressing issues with dangerous apartments and providing recommendations made in the Out of Order report. We will also be testifying before the Mayor and city council members and requesting a Town Hall Meeting in which they can respond to the community’s concerns.

"We understand that the City of Houston is exhausting efforts to help those affected by the storm, but it is also important to note that this problem has been present even before Harvey and all we are trying to do is give a voice to those who at one point thought were voiceless." – Maria Sosa FEIL Houston’s Tenant Rights Organizer
