“ It is a sad day not only for Mr Gudiel but for his family and our community. A hard working man who was at the wrong place at the wrong time is now suffering because of our broken immigration policies. We will continue to support the family and will do everything kn our power to reach out to congress to fix our broken immigration system. – Cesar Espinosa FIEL Executive Director
“We must continue fighting and advocating for every client with the hopes we can get them some sort of relief. In the last year we have seen an increase in these types of cases. It is unfortunate that USCIS does not exercise their prosecutorial discretion allowing families to continue to stay together. “ Raed Gonzalez Immigration Attorney
BACKGROUND STORY:
Mr Carlos Gudiel (29 years old) was detained on February 19 at 6:20am. His wife Marcela Rivera was preparing breakfast just like any other morning routine for her husband to go to work.
Mr. Carlos left his apartment at 6:20 to load his tools into his truck. At around 6:40am he caleld his wife lettign her know that immigration had detained him in the parking lot of their apartment. Mr Carlos asked the immigration office for the opportunity for someone to gcome get his tools from his truck. It was then when his son Erick , age 14, was able to go down and find his father detained by ICE. "Immigration got me Erick" said Mr Carlos. Erick recounts to his mother that immigration was in a gray Ford Truck and that he was only able to grab his wallet from his father.
It seemed to be the perfect day everyone was ready to start on their day go to school and work but due to their fathers detention all activity seized for the day. During the day Erick comments that "it saddens and angers him" that they arrested his father.
The youngest child in the family got sick immediately after his father’s detention and did not eat or sleep for three days following the incident.
Carlos and Marcela have know each other for 10 years, have been married for 5 years and have 5 children together.
