PASSPORTS BEING DENIED TO U.S. CITIZENS
[Houston, TX] On Wednesday August 29, 2018 the Texas Tribune reported on a story of U.S. Citizens being denied passports particularly in the Texas Valley near the U.S. Mexico border. We have seen this question of birthright citizenship come up before. FIEL spokespeople are available for comment.
" Unfortunately this is not the first time we have seen U.S. citizens being denied their passports. In previous administrations there was a questioning of the validity of peoples citizenship especially when they are born to a midwife which is common practice in rural areas and in areas where the cost of hospitalization may be unattainable for some. We want to make sure to encourage U.S. Citizens (including naturalized citizens) to continue in their process of obtaining their passports. We would also like to point out that this does not change the process of obtaining their children’s passports even if the parents are without status. We also encourage people who may find themselves in situations where there are doubts to seek immediate legal counsel. " – Cesar Espinosa Executive Director FIEL
