PRESS ADVISORY: HPD TURNS MAN OVER TO ICE AFTER TRAFFIC STOP

[HOUSTON, TX] – On Friday, March 14, 2025, at 11:00 AM, the family of a man who was turned over to ICE by the Houston Police Department (HPD) following a routine traffic stop, along with spokespeople from FIEL (Immigrant Families and Students in the Fight), will gather at FIEL Headquarters (4635 Southwest Freeway #220, Houston, TX 77027) to share the details of the incident and demand answers from local authorities.

“Over the past 52 days, we’ve been persistently seeking answers from HPD and the Whittmire administration about their collaboration with ICE in the nation’s fourth-largest city. Unfortunately, we’ve been met with vague responses or complete silence. Today, we come forward to demand a clear plan moving forward. For years, we’ve worked hard to build trust and cooperation between law enforcement and the community. But incidents like this drive a wedge between us and make our community more vulnerable. When people fear local law enforcement, they’re less likely to report crimes, whether as victims or witnesses,” said Cesar Espinosa, Executive Director of FIEL.

FIEL: Immigrant Families and Students in the Fight is an immigrant-led civil rights organization advocating for just laws for all families, access to higher education for everyone regardless of immigration status, and the protection of all individuals facing unjust situations.
