STATEMENT TRUMP ATTACKS TEXAS DREAMERS
[HOUSTON, TX] WEDNESDAY JUNE 4 2025 THE TRUMP DOJ SUED THE STATE OF TEXAS BECAUSE OF HB 1403 PASSED IN 2001. GOVERNOR ABBOT QUICKLY ENJOINED IN THE LAWSUIT EFFECTIVELY ENDING IN STATE TUITION FOR UNDOCUMENTED STUDENTS IN THE STATE OF TEXAS. FIEL RELEASES THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT.
“It is a dark day in the State of Texas. After 24 years of having in-state tuition for hard-working undocumented Texas Students, the Trump Administration has taken an unprecedented step to cut their dreams short. With a reataliatory lawsuit the Courts Stuck down HB1403 (2001) which was a law that was passed to grant in-state tuition to certain undocumented Texans if they met certain criteria. Undocumented students make up 1.5% of the student body in Texas, yet they create $84 million dollars in surplus to university systems. It is estimated that Texas stands to lose $245 million dollars in wages and over $216 million dollars over the next year if the measure is left unchallenged. Without in- state tuition many students who have grown up in Texas, simply will not be able to afford three or four times the tuition other Texas students pay. This is not just. We will take this to the courts and we will continue to fight for the rights of every student in the State of Texas" – Cesar Espinosa FIEL Executive Director
