HATE HAS NO PLACE IN OUR CITY
[HOUSTON, TX] On Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at 2:00 pm at 5445 Almeda Road, Houston, TX 77004, State Representative Jolanda Jones, FIEL Spokespoeple and other leaders in the community will come forward to address the comments made at an Austin High School Volleyball game.
“Threatening to call ICE on a child’s parents at a volleyball game is way out of bounds! It is cruel and absolutely unacceptable. People have died at the hands of ICE. Children need their parents! If a child says something inappropriate, take it to the coach or referee. Those adults should have been removed from that gym. As Black people, we know the dangers of racial profiling. We should stand with Latino families, not terrorize their children. HISD has a duty to protect ALL students, including visiting students, at school-sponsored events. I expect answers and accountability,” said State Representative Jolanda “Jo” Jones.
"We live in fragile times with much uncertainty. We condemn any action that looks to demean or threaten someone. But we must look at this as a teachable moment. A moment where we muct come together and have open and honest conversations, not about the differences between our communities, but how we can come together to enact change. We hope that the school deals with the disciplinary action against the adults in this case since they were out of line talking to children this way.
