We will continue to fight until we get the DREAM Act.  We will continue to ask the Obama Administration for an Executive order to grant deferred action to DREAM Act Eligible youth” said Cesar Espinosa FIEL Executive Director

THE DREAM IS COMING
Rally in support of the Texas Hunger Strikers

HOUSTON – On Wednesday November 24, 2010 at 11:00a.m. at the Mickey Leeland Federal Building (1919 Smith St. Houston, TX 77002) FIEL will hold a demonstration in solidarity with Texas Hunger Strikers. This action is geared at getting Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison to support the DREAM Act and to bring light to the Texas Hunger Strikers. The Texas Hunger Strikers are a group of students around the State of Texas who have decided to go on Strike until Senator Hutchison Co-Sponsors the DREAM Act. Thousands of young people all over the united states still have their dreams on hold waiting for the DREAM Act to be approved. They would love to be able to complete their education or would love to serve in our forces but are denied the chance because of lack of documentation.

What is the DREAM ACT?

The DREAM Act is a bi-partisan piece of legislation which would provide a path to legality for persons brought to the United States by their parents as children, or whose parents attempted to immigrate legally but were then denied legality alter several years of applying and whose children thus derived their legal status solely form their parents (the child also become undocumented upon the parent’s denial)

Cesar Espinosa, Executive Director of Immigrant Families and Students in the Struggle (FIEL), urges Senator Hutchison to support the DREAM Act and vote “Yes” on it when it come up for a vote. “Thus coming month is decisive for our youth. We urge Senator Hutchison to take leadership and vote yes on the DREAM Act like she has in the past.”

THE DREAM IS COMING

Vigil in support of the DREAM Act

HOUSTON – On Thursday, September 16, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. at the Mickey Leeland Federal Building (1919 Smith Street Houston, TX 77002), community leaders, students and parents will gather in conjunction with a nation wide campaign to create awareness on the DREAM Act (S729) in the coming days to ensure its passage in the senate.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (NV-D) announced on Tuesday, September 14, 2010, his attachment of the DREAM Act (S. 729) as an amendment to the Defense Authorization Bill that is being introduced next week.

“The time for action is now. Too many futures are being put on hold because of our broken immigration system. These kids want to join our military or go to college; they know our language and our customs. Let’s give them the opportunity to move our country forward,” said Cesar Espinosa, Executive Director of FIEL.

FREE THE DREAM ACT NOW!
Students and local community leaders ask Congress to give full support to pass the DREAM ACT and ask for the release the 23 arrestees in Washington D.C.

[HOUSTON] On Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at 8:00p.m. at the Mickey Leeland Federal Building (1919 Smith Houston, TX 77002) there will be a vigil in support of the 23 young men and women arrested in acts of civil disobedience in Washington, D.C.. This will be part of a series of national events for the DREAM Act. The purpose of this vigil is to bring awareness on the movement that is ever growing for DREAM Act as a stand alone bill and to bring community awareness to the DREAM Act so that we may remind Congress that the time to pass it is NOW!

FREE THE DREAM:
The DREAM Act had been introduced and can be voted on as a stand alone piece of legislation without being attached to the larger proposed Comprehensive Immigration Reform piece. So we are urging congress to move forward with it NOW. Do not hold the DREAMs of millions hostage!
The DREAM Act is a narrowly tailored bipartisan piece of legislation that addresses the tragedy of young people who grew up in the United States and have graduated from our high schools, but whose futures are circumscribed by our current immigration laws.
The DREAM Act would enact two major changes in current law:

· Permit certain immigrant students who have grown up in the U.S. to apply for temporary
legal status and to eventually obtain permanent status and become eligible for U.S.
citizenship if they go to college or serve in the U.S. military; and

· Eliminate a federal provision that penalizes states that provide in-state tuition without regard to immigration status

The nation as a whole would benefit from the education of these young people, who will be able to make their fullest contribution as future taxpayers, professionals and leaders in areas of critical importance to the nation’s economy and security.

On this National Day of Action, FIEL Launches Website and Celebrates New DREAM Act Endorsements

[HOUSTON] On Wednesday June 16, 2010 at 11:30a.m. at CRECEN (6601 Hillcroft #125 – Houston, TX  77081) On this National Day of Action, media representatives are advised that members of Familias Imigrantes y Estudiantes en   la Lucha/Immigrant Families and Students in the Struggle (FIEL) will be launching their website www.fielhouston.org . Interviews will also be available concerning this new tool and the recent announcements of Rep. Al Green and Henry Cuellar as new co-sponsors for the DREAM Act.

Hundreds of actions are organized every year by student groups, local, state and national organizations as part of the National Day of Action for the DREAM Act. These events highlight the unfinished dreams of thousands of our nation’s youth and the need for passage of the DREAM Act, a bipartisan legislation that creates a path to legal status for undocumented students.

This year Houston has chosen to announce a new tool for the immigrant community, a website. The new website, available atwww.hfielhouston.org , features information on resources available to the community such as financial aid resource for students, answers to some student immigration questions, and specific information for undocumented college students will be available.  This information will range from How to Get in to College, Financial Aid opportunities to current information on the DREAM Act and how to get involved. We are also celebrating a local win. Rep. Al Green has joined the list of DREAM Act as an official co-sponsor. We praise his leadership and commitment to the immigrant community.
