YOUNG MAN ARRESTED NEAR AUSTIN HIGH SCHOOL
[Houston, TX] From the information our office has been able to gather: On Tuesday January 30, 2018 an altercation ensued outside of Austin High School, in Houston Texas, which led to a fight which led to the arrest of Denniss Rivera.
"It is unfortunate that and event like this would occur on any campus at HISD. We want to clarify that, from what we know, at no point did any officer of HISD contact ICE to come pick up Mr. Rivera. Mr Rivera was sent to booking after the altercation that took place near Austin High School and from that point on he had an ICE detainer placed on him due to his status. In the last few hours we have heard many people accusing HISD on social media that they called ICE on a student and from our understanding that is not the case. We stand with HISD in their mission to educate all people regardless of their immigration status and the strides that they have made throughout the years to maintain a safe and welcoming learning environment for all. We hope to continue to help educate families and to continue to expand our community’s growth within the district. We encourage parents to continue to sending their children to school since HISD DOES NOT COLLABORATE WITH ICE and for the students on campus to not fear campus police since they are there for their safety. We hope to continue to stand by HISD to develop policies which will continue to be inclusive of the immigrant community in Houston. " -Cesar Espinosa Executive Director FIEL
