STATEMENT ON REINSTATMENT OF OFFICERS RESPOSIBLE FOR NICHOLAS CHAVEZ DEATH

[HOUSTON, TX]Monday March 14, 2022 HPD announced that the officers responsible for Nicholas Chavez’s death will have to be reinstated . FIEL has issued the following statement.

First and foremost our condolences and thoughts are with the family of Nicholas Chavez. No family should have to go through the constant pain of losing a loved one and further be pressed with the pain that those who cause their loved one harm remain free and without consequences. In talking to community we have the following questions and recommendations:

– For the sake of transparency and accountability, can we make IPOB /ADC decisions or deliberations available to the community and that their recommendations are not absolute?
– What concrete changes will be made to training models so that we can ensure these situations won’t continue to play out in our community?

-We recommend that, because the community can no longer trust these officers our community need to be assured that these officers will no longer be on patrol
-We recommend that the City, County, State and the community do better job at financing and divulging places where families can access mental health services so that families don’t have to resort to the police to help in calming a loved one. We will do our part to continue the conversations around mental health and the importance of it.
-We recommend that the principles of community policing be upheld to the highest standards and that we resolve this situation in a way that is most beneficial for all parties involved.

" As a community member and a member of the Police Reform Taskforce I know that these situations are very complex and that there will be no ‘winners’ at the end of the day. We feel for our community and know that as a city we can still do better. My hope is that this unfortunate event can teach us all something. At the end of the day this family still deserves JUSTICE" – Cesar Espinosa FIEL Executive Director
